Celebrating Human Rights

I think it is thime we say Happy Birthday to the One organisation which makes us aware of the need for Human Rights – since 50 years.

Amnesty international has been advocating the rights of those who cannot speak for themselves for a long time. Do you know how it all started?

In the following video you do not only find out how AI came to being but you also see how its birthday has been celebrated:

Since the beginning Amnesty has been fighting against the death penalty. With success:

“In 1977, only 16 countries had abolished the death penalty for all crimes. As of December 2010 that figure stands at 96 and more than two thirds of the countries in the world have abolished the death penalty in law or practice.”

AI has a lot of inspirational stories to tell, like for example how Hafez Ibrahims life was safed in Yemen.

Do you want to know what Amnesty is doing right now? They are helping women to get a voice in the new Egypt, pressure the Oil industry to take responsability for the pollution in the Niger delta and fight for the right of abortion in Nicaragua, where all abortion is illegal, even for rape-survivors. Besides, they are closely monitoring the changes which are going on at the moment in the world in order to make the future brighter, at least in the light of Human Rights.
